Research Proposal by Professor Ennishi (Okayama University Hospital) Selected by AMED for its 2022 “Genome Medical Realization Biobank Utilization Program (Genome Omics Analysis that Supports Next-generation Medical Infrastructure)”

Professor ENNISHI Daisuke at the Okayama University Hospital Center for Comprehensive Genomic Medicine has received a research grant from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) for its 2022 “Genome Medical Realization Biobank Utilization Program (Genome Omics Analysis that Supports Next-generation Medical Infrastructure)"

This project aims to develop research infrastructures, such as Japan’s biobanks and biological samples and health and medical information collected through cohort studies on genomic information via Omics data analysis, that can efficiently and effectively contribute to the realization of next-generation medicine that takes into account individual differences due to genetic factors. Since the process of genomic and Omics analysis involves a wide variety of targets and methods, as well as significant time and cost, this project aims to introduce a strategic system to analyze samples in order of priority based on scientific merit. Admirably, Professor Ennishi’s research proposal was selected out of thirteen applications, and he will lead a research team under the theme of “Construction of a Spatial Single-Cell Multi-Omics Database for Elucidation of the Pathophysiology of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Development of Novel Therapies” in 2022.

In response to his successful application, Professor Ennishi commented, "The research team aims to elucidate the pathogenesis of COPD and develop therapeutic drugs by making full use of the world-class genome technology at Okayama University”.

Professor Ennishi is an exceptional researcher whose research efforts have not only been recognized by Okayama University, but also by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Under the “Research Professor” system at Okayama University, which was established to encourage outstanding associate professors to become lead researchers (Principal Investigators) in their fields of interest, Professor Ennishi has received incentives such as increased funding and research aids. Furthermore, he was selected for the FOREST (Fusion Orientated Research for disruptive Science and Technology) Program*, a JST program to support young researchers. *JST FOREST (Fusion Oriented REsearch for disruptive Science and Technology) Program This program aims to create research seeds that will encourage disruptive innovation through diversity and fusion without setting specific projects or short-term goals. It helps create an environment in which researchers can devote themselves to their research by providing long-term support for diverse, unrestricted, challenging and fusion-oriented research for the period of seven years (may be extended up to ten years after an interim review).
